Pet Therapeutic Laser
Our most recent technique for treating pain is the therapeutic laser. A therapeutic laser is the application of light energy to areas of the body to stimulate healing. Photobiomodulation refers to the interaction of light with tissue. Historically, therapeutic laser was referred to as “low-level” or “cold” laser (as opposed to surgical or “hot” laser). The term “laser” originated as an acronym for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Laser light is distinct from “normal” light in that it has a single wavelength and is focused (concentrated). The wavelength of a therapeutic laser influences its biological effects and is measured in nanometers (nm). The wavelength also determines the depth of penetration into the body’s tissues. The majority of medical laser applications employ light wavelengths ranging from visible red to infrared. Visible wavelengths penetrate tissue to a shallower depth, whereas infrared wavelengths penetrate deeper.
